Enjoy the Snow!
You don’t have
to dread the winter season! Why not entertain the idea of cross-country skiing
or snowshoeing? Fresh snowfall creates perfect conditions for skiing,
snowshoeing and physical exercise.
Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is a great way to exercise in the winter. Cross country skiing burns more calories per hour than any other sport because you are working almost every muscle in your body. Snowshoeing is also an excellent fat burning workout. It’s also a peaceful way to enjoy the winter season. Whether it’s seeing animal tracks in the snow or listening to birds sing, skiing and snowshoeing offers you an opportunity to enjoy and become a part of the winter landscape.
Snowshoeing at Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt |
Whether you are an avid skier or
just a beginner, there are several great places to cross-country ski in Central
Iowa. You will find groomed cross-country ski trails in Jester Park and
Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt. Of course you can break your own ski trail in just
about any public park.
One of
the great things about snowshoeing is that you can do it anywhere. The
only places to avoid snowshoeing are on groomed cross-country ski trails.
You can rent cross-country skis and snowshoes
at Pingora Outdoors (located in the Jester Park Outdoor Recreation &
Wellness Center) when there is at least 4 inches of snow on the ground. Skis
and snowshoes rent for $20/day.
Polk County Conservation will be offering
several opportunities for people to learn how to cross-country ski or snowshoe.
