Pelican Viewing in Iowa
Every September Saylorville Lake becomes one of the largest resting spots for migrating American white pelicans. Pelicans start arriving at Saylorville Lake from Canada and the northern U.S. in late July-early August. During their fall migration, they spend several weeks at Saylorville Lake feeding and resting. White pelicans diet consists of fish, amphibians, and crustaceans and will eat up to four pounds of food a day. By late September-early October most of the pelicans will have flown south to the Gulf Coast for the winter months.
Jester Park offers several great viewing points of Saylorville Lake where you might catch a glimpse of these amazing birds. Try parking at the boat ramp in Jester Park or head down past Campground #6 until you get to the lakeshore. Another spot to check would be Lincoln Access at the Mile-Long bridge.
Best time of day to view them is before 10 a.m. Pelicans move around quite a bit on the lake, so they may not always be visible.
