It’s Been a Grand Experience

Soon to be up and running in a few weeks, the Jester Park Nature Center is almost ready to welcome its first visitors on August 5th for the grand opening! The long journey of waiting and the final stages of construction are coming to an end. Flooring has been installed throughout the building, along with the installation of the elevator, electrical, plumbing, doors, trim, paint, and concrete surrounding the nature center. Due to last month’s flooding, extreme wet conditions slowed outside work on the north terrace, pond, and streamscape, but work is rapidly progressing to complete it! The streamscape won’t be completed by the grand opening, but it will be soon after.

Furniture and equipment has been arriving at the nature center daily. Outdoor furniture will arrive just in time for the grand opening giving those a comfortable place to sit while taking in the beautiful views of Jester Park from the back patio. Polk County Conservation offices are also being assembled and staff will be moving into the building by August 1st. This will allow the public easier access to Polk County Conservation information and staff when needed.

The environmental exhibits and murals have been installed and are ready to welcome Grand Opening visitors to discover different ecosystems and learn about plants, animals, and more!

 Work on the Outdoor Recreation and Wellness Center is coming to an end with local Ankeny outdoor store, Pingora Outdoors, moving in and opening up Pingora Outdoors at Jester Park within the building. There, you will have the opportunity to rent summer and winter equipment such as canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, cross-country skis, and snowshoes. You can also shop for firewood, food items, and plenty of outdoor gear and clothing to choose from! They will also be celebrating their grand opening on August 5th. Combined, the two facilities will provide new opportunities for the public to learn and explore our natural surroundings. The Jester Park Nature Center will truly be a Gateway to the Outdoors.
