The Final Stretch

It’s hard to believe that the Jester Park Nature Center is only one month away from the grand opening. With years and years in the making, beyond just construction, the nature center is fulfilling the dreams of those before us. We are excited to be in the final stretch!

The month of June was full of rain, but work continued inside the nature center with the installation of carpeting and floor tile, interior doors, cabinets, counters, and lighting. The donor mural, created by Sticks, was installed in mid-June above the staircase in the upper level of the building. Heating & cooling systems were calibrated, and work on the roof and exterior siding of the nature center was completed.

Focus this month will be on final touches, including the elevator, remaining wood trim, and other lighting fixtures located throughout the building. The streamscape, north terrace and outdoor fireplace, sidewalks, and exterior lighting will be completed by the end of July.

Once the construction in the nature center is completed in early July, furniture, fixtures and equipment will be brought in. This includes the environmental exhibits, office furniture, kitchen equipment, classroom tables and chairs, and the many other pieces needed for operation. Staff will be moving into the center at the end of July.

The Outdoor Recreation and Wellness Center is also wrapping up with most of the work completed in June. Final construction will be completed by July for public programs that will be taking place in the center. Pingora Outdoors will begin operating a camp store within the Recreation and Wellness building just in time for the grand opening on August 5th. There, you will be able to find items such as firewood, rental equipment like canoes and kayaks, snacks and other food items, and plenty of outdoor gear and clothing.
